When Stephen Moffat took over the reigns of Doctor Who back in 2010, many of us were wondering just how the new Doctor would turn out. Within the first few minutes of the series, we fell in love with Matt Smith’s version of the Doctor and the young Amelia Pond. Like many great relationships, they all must end.
Stephen Moffat revealed at a press screening in London that Amy and Rory will be on their final journey with the Doctor and the TARDIS in the upcoming series. “But the final days of the Ponds are coming – and during the next series. I’m not telling you when and certainly not telling you how. But that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end.”
This is something that many Doctor Who fans are use to, given the heartbreaking way Rose left the Doctor back in series two. The feelers were already put out there given that Karen Gillan was taking on a new movie and play after the next Who break. Not to mention, she was referring to “when Amy leaves” scenarios in many recent interviews.
“There are only so many more adventures with the lovely Amy and the lovely Rory. So that story, next series, during the series will be over,” Moffat said. “And then the Doctor is going to meet a new friend – and I’m not going to tell you anything about he, she or it!”
“We’ve had the most incredible journey,” said Matt Smith of Gillan. “We took over the show and we really had to hold hands and help each other through it in many ways. So it’s very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration and that’s what galvanises [sic] it and moves it forward. It’s about looking forward, always.”
It is common for most of the companions to have a short shelf life on the series, but Amy and Rory have become very loved by fans. Some are even vowing not to watch the show ever again once they leave. Fans will continue, like many fans that loved Rose Tyler continued to watch. The life of the Doctor continues on with whoever is companion at the time.
I, for one, will be truly sad to see them go and their characters have grown as much as they can in the series, especially since the whole River Song storyline has been revealed. The Christmas special will be Amy and Rory – less, so I guess we can see how it will turn out without either one of them on board. However, I will continue watching the series because I ain’t like that.
