James Spader isn’t the only person departing the long-running NBC series The Office, executive producer and showrunner Paul Lieberstein is exiting to begin prepping the Rainn Wilson spin-off, The Farm, which is due to premiere mid-season of next season.
While we only have two confirmed departures scheduled for the end of the current season, their search for a new showrunner could be stymied by the possibility of the main cast not returning for another season. John Krasinski, Ed Helms, Jenna Fischer and B.J. Novak are in negotiations with producers, but according to Deadline talks have stalled.
Another potential departure could be Mindy Kaling, who is prepping a pilot for Fox and should it get picked up, she would be leaving as well. Many observers say that the resigning of the main core cast is essential to NBC renewing the show for another season. While NBC is hurting so bad in the ratings that it wants to pull this train as long as it can, while most people are thinking they should let it go already and renew Community for a fourth season.
