The long-languishing project that I kind of wish to and not to see turned into a movie has finally gotten themselves a director. Nic Mathieu has been selected to bring the live-action adaptation of Robotech to the big screen. The film has been in development since 2007 with Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire onboard as producers.

The Hollywood Reporter explains that if you’ve never heard of Mathieu before then you are not alone. He is a commercial director and will be making his big screen debut with the film. How he got the job is truly a major deal, but his commercials are known for their inventive CG effects which could have been a major reason he got the gig.

I used to watch this series when I would get home from school. Recently, I rediscovered the series on Netflix and have been taken into it. Now, Warner Bros. is viewing this as a possible franchise, so don’t expect the whole saga to be told in two hours. However, what remains to be seen is if they try to use Southern Cross and The New Generation as possible continuations for the film franchise if it’s successful.

I guess we will have to wait and see.
