Apple TV 4K Officially Announced

A while back, we brought to you that the Apple TV was planning to release a 4K version of their device but was working on pricing for the movies in that resolution range. While there was no announcement in regards to their pricing of 4K movies, the Apple TV with 4K was announced at their Apple event on Tuesday.

The adoption of 4K allows Apple to finally be on the same footing as Roku, Amazon and Chrome that have had 4K for quite some time. Pricing for the devices will range from $179 for the 32GB version, while the 64GB version will run you $199.

In addition to 4K, Apple is embracing HDR with this latest Apple TV with support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10. These high dynamic range technologies allow for brighter highlights and an expanded range of colors on television sets that also have HDR. The difference can be striking — sometimes even more so than the jump in resolution to 4K.

Even the interface will have a 4K redesign and the Siri Remote will be upgraded for the new device. It was announced that major Hollywood studios will be offering 4K resolution films on iTunes. An added benefit for those thinking of an upgrade, if you already purchased an eligible film in HD, you will be automatically upgraded to 4K HDR for free.

Some of the studios mentioned in the announcement was 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Universal, Warner Bros., and Sony Pictures. Obviously, these studios will be available at launch but the list could grow later one.

As for the inside, the new Apple TV hardware is more powerful than the previous model. It will feature an A10X Fusion processor (the same as what’s currently in the iPad Pro) and 3GB of RAM, which will result in CPU performance twice as fast as the last model. Those upgraded internals should allow for smooth playback of 4K content at up to 60 frames per second. They should also make the Apple TV a more capable gaming device. ThatGameCompany, the developer of Journey and other unique titles, is creating a new game called Sky for Apple’s updated set-top box.

Pre-orders for the new Apple TV will begin on September 15th, with a launch date of September 22nd.
