When you look back on social media, it is amazing how opinions change in a heartbeat. When the announcement of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was announced, the internet went wild. Once the announcement that Ben Affleck was going to play the caped crusader, fans began to lose hope that the movie that would launch the DC Cinematic Universe would crumble before it began. Now, the internet is wondering when the solo Batman movie will debut.
For the last few months, we have been teased with villains for the upcoming movie and that Affleck himself may even direct it. Yet, when dealing with the internet, you need to take whatever news you receive with a grain of salt. A singular comment can turn a normally innocuous statement into a studio directive for the next 20 years. So, take this as you wish.
While recently sitting down with The Guardian, Affleck was talking about his upcoming movie, Live By Night, and at the end of the article, he was asked about the upcoming solo Batman movie. When asked about now getting to direct his own super hero movie, he had this to say, “That’s the idea. But it’s not a set thing and there’s no script. If it doesn’t come together in a way I think is really great I’m not going to do it.”
Now, some news sites are reporting this statement to mean that the whole movie is in jeopardy because if the script isn’t good at all, he will not be in it. I am sure that is not the case. Directing a movie is no easy feat. You are spending years developing, shooting, editing and promoting the film. It would seem more along the line that if he doesn’t feel solid about the project, he would not attach his name or time to a project that doesn’t deserve it.
Needless to say, if the internet rumors are to be believed, filming is supposed to begin this coming spring. Affleck may have directed the comment to say that he wouldn’t have chosen to direct the movie if it was complete garbage. Not referring to where he is at this point but the reasoning behind it. In the world of the internet, clicks are king, and site will report anything to keep their ad revenues flowing.
