A major coup was announced on Tuesday, a day before new comic release day. DC Comics has managed to woo away one of Marvel’s signature writers, Brian Michael Bendis. It was announced today via Twitter that Bendis has been signed to an exclusive multiyear, multi-faceted contract. This is a huge get for DC.

“We are beyond thrilled to welcome Brian Michael Bendis exclusively to the DC Family with a multiyear, multi-faceted deal,” DC wrote in a statement on its official twitter account. “He’s one of the premier writers in the industry having created so many stories wherever he’s been and we can’t wait to see what he has planned for the DC Universe.”

Bendis confirmed the news via his Twitter account.

This is not the first time a writer has been wooed from one company to another. However, lately, many writers have moved away from the big two to work more on creator-owned content. Bendis’ departure is a major hit for Marvel. Keep in mind this is the guy that co-created Miles Morales, Jessica Jones and developed the original Civil War storyline.

Marvel issues a statement in regard to Bendis’ departure:

“Brian is a great partner and has contributed incredible stories and characters to the Marvel Universe over the years,” reads the statement. “We appreciate his creativity and professionalism, and we wish him the best on his future projects.”

The biggest question is where is Bendis going to fit in within the DC Universe. On a personal note, Bendis has always been a writer that surprises me. As I have mentioned before, when it was described what his story would be I would always think it sounded dumb. However, when I read the first issue, I was usually hooked. I’m curious to see where he goes to next.
