In light of online retailers and digital copies for gaming, GameStop has been trying to find new ways to get customers in their stores. It seems that they are moving in Gamefly territory by offering gaming rentals. The Verge is reporting that GameStop will begin a game rental service that is slated to begin around mid-November.
The new program, called Power Pass, will cost you $60 for six months. This will allow you to borrow any used game that GameStop has in stock. In that six-month period, you will be able to rent any used game. Play it as much as you want. Return it and check out another title. At the end of the six months, you can keep whatever the last title you checked out.
The only stipulation to join this service, you need to be a member of their rewards service. GameStop offers a PowerUp Rewards program, but the free version of the membership will work. The only other limitation is that you are subject to the library of your local GameStop.
According to the company, the new service will be available to purchase “the week of November 13th”. You can also purchase it as a gift, but the receiver needs to be a PowerUp Rewards member as well.
If you like to play a lot of games, this may be a good deal. However, you are still paying $60 for the game you get to keep. Playing a minimum of three games during that six-month period would make a better deal. It is not clear whether you would be able to transfer it between different stores. In case you rent from one location and move to another for a better selection.
However, with the holidays coming up, this would be a good idea for someone that likes to play. Maybe they don’t know which game they want. Signing up for a free version of the PowerUp Rewards is a small price to pay in the end.
