When the announcement of Warner Bros. Suicide Squad 2 came out earlier this year, David Ayer was presumed to be returning. Quickly, it was announced that he would be heading up an adaptation of Gotham Sirens and that Mel Gibson was being approached to direct. As I said back then, Mel Gibson will not direct the sequel, which is why they are still trying to lock down a director.
Deadline is reporting that Jaume Collet-Serra, who was selected to direct Suicide Squad 2 (or approached depending on which publication you read) has opted to leave Warner Bros. and take a stab at a new project over at the House of Mouse. Disney has managed to get Collet-Serra to sign on to direct Dwayne Johnson in their upcoming Jungle Cruise.
According to the site, he opted to leave the sequel to take the opportunity to originate a new Indiana Jones-like action-adventure franchise.
With big sequels coming down the pipeline, it is harder to find big or up-and-coming directors to take on a sequel, unless they have full creative control. Hence why I pushed back at the internet’s opinion that Mel Gibson was going to direct the sequel.
Disney has been fifty-fifty in regard to making feature-films off of their ride from the park. Pirates of the Caribbean has done well for them but movies like The Haunted Mansion have not fared so well. It will be interesting who the internet chooses to focus on as their next pick for Suicide Squad 2.
