Recently, the comic universe lost legendary creator Len Wein. Coming in January, DC Comics will be releasing a tribute to Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Both who passed away earlier this year. It was originally designed to be the first issue of a Swamp Thing miniseries. However, it will be offered as a one-shot with a lead story by Tom King and drawn by Jason Fabok.
King, shortly after Wein’s death, had introduced the character in his run of Batman. King received much praise for his portrayal of the character. However, while the issue came out just after Wein’s death, King had written the story when Wein was still living.
“I wrote it before he passed away, and I had only really met Bernie once, at a convention, but the whole issue is about death,” King said of the Batman issue. “It’s about how Batman and Swamp Thing deal with death differently. What I think is crazy about the Swamp Thing character is how much of the human soul that monster has explored. What Len and Bernie did with that character was to create a portal through which writers could write about all the themes in comics that they didn’t think they could approach when they first came to the medium. There’s something about him that makes you want to write about deeper, more literary themes.”
In all honesty, they could not have selected a better tribute to two legends of the industry.
