This may have been rolled out for many of you already, but this has just affected me so thus I’m reporting it. DirecTV has been doing some new stuff to their HD-DVR boxes lately, like allowing you to view YouTube through your boxes. This morning, my two HD-DVR boxes received an update that were actually pretty cool.

First, if you have a Pandora account, you can now stream Pandora through your HD-DVR box. All you need to do is select the ‘Menu’ button then scroll down to ‘Extras’ and you will see the Pandora app.

You can use your existing Pandora account, because who honestly doesn’t have one or you can go to and create your own. You will need to do a quick authorization by going to and input the code your receiver gives you. Its simple and similar to allowing Netflix to stream on any device.

Secondly, there is a new power saver option on the television. If you have left your television on and haven’t used your remote for four hours, then the box will turn itself off. This happened to me this morning. I left my television on last night and after the update, I noticed the television was off when I woke up.

Now, if you don’t dig this, all you need to do is go to you’re the ‘Settings’ menu and turn that option off. I will try it out for a while and see if it is an annoyance since I use the remote usually once an hour. This is some of the cooler options that they are slowly adding for DirecTV customers, but I am waiting for them to complete the work on that ‘Apps’ option.

Nice. I just followed the setup instructions (pandora misspelled directtv by the way) and it works great. I was about to go and drop some serious scratch to get a internet ready tv, but this allows me to hold off a little longer. Sweet.
