Anything will make news nowadays. All you have to do is configure words like “batman”, “Affleck”, “departure” and you have yourself a “trending” news story for about 24 hours. Since Ben Affleck decided that he no longer could direct The Batman movie, speculation in the last two weeks have gone from he is no longer writing the movie to now he wants out of the series altogether.
I hate giving sites credence when they are definitely out to click-bate people, but Collider has some sources that say Affleck is looking to exit the whole DCU entirely. Collider Movie Talk host John Campea is saying that he has three sources involved with Warner Bros. that Affleck is working on a deal with Warner Bros. to leave the franchise.
“Ben Affleck, make no mistake, he wants out. He doesn’t want to be Batman anymore,” he said on the show. Granted, this type of “source” material will make your show popular for about 24 hours, but it’s sad that they had to do this for clicks. If you have listened to our podcast, you have heard us mention that these “sources” usually end up being a barista, bagel guy and some person that heard it from the janitor who heard some guy from the mail room said in the bathroom.
There are many reasons why this story should be taken as a brief puff of smoke. It hits you strongly initially and then you completely forget about it. 1) Affleck would not have to negotiate to get himself out of the movie, while 2) he knew what he was getting into when he signed on. Affleck has been Warners golden boy for a while and if he wanted to remotely leave – he would have a clause in his contract to bail.
I am actually disappointed in Collider that they would resort to this sort of sham news, but this is the day of the internet. When you are supported by a big company, you have to say something to get clicks to make yourself profitable. I used to hold them in higher regard but this simply kills me, as well as other sites using this to promote clicks.
Some sites are suggesting that you should take this with a grain of salt. I suggest taking it with less than that. Take it with the weight of an atom. You know it exists but you don’t see it. This will be part of the news cycle for the next 24 hours and it will move on to another Affleck-related story. Although, with the way these fanboys are hounding him, I would not be surprised if he did want out. I would.
