(UPDATE July 26, 2017): It has been five days since the computer glitch at Walmart allowed people to pre-order the SNES Classic Mini, only to find out that they were not actually available for pre-order and all pre-orders were being cancelled. Within that five day period, Walmart has not responded until today.
“Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the Super Nintendo Classic Edition was mistakenly made available last Friday evening ahead of the official release date,” said Deserie Dulaney, senior director for customer care at Walmart, in an email to pre-order customers this afternoon, according to Polygon. “We, regrettably, will have to cancel this item on your order. We know that this is incredibly disappointing to you, and we’re truly sorry for this mistake.”
If you paid with a gift card or PayPal, you will receive a refund once your order has been cancelled. Credit card purchases were not charged. Still no word on when those pre-orders will happen.
During our Lazy Geeks Podcast on Monday, we brought you guys a story about Walmart taking pre-orders for Nintendo’s latest SNES Mini Classic. During the podcast, I had mentioned that it was weird that US pre-ordering was done in a piece meal fashion. Well, Polygon reported on Monday that those pre-orders were a mistake. Due to a technical glitch, Walmart’s pre-order went live and allowed people to order it. Now, those that hoped to see it arriving on their doorstep are getting cancelled notices.
We are so sorry! The SNES Classics were released to soon. -Ash

It seems that pre-orders went live late Friday night shortly after 11:30 pm EDT and crashed the website in thirty minutes. It seems that on Saturday, early reports were coming in that Walmart had been cancelling the orders. Due to the big Comic-Con day, it seemed that no one bothered to notice until Monday. In a Twitter exchange, a Walmart rep told a customer that it went live due to a “website error.” The Rep added, “The orders that were placed will be cancelled.”
It would seem that there is currently no plan to allow some stores to pre-order while others waited. While Europe has already ordered theirs, the US market is still waiting to get their hands on the pre-orders. There is still no time table as to when the SNES Mini consoles will be available and no official reason as to why Walmart allowed the pre-orders to happen. We will update this post when it happens and be sure to listen on Monday’s episode because this will be discussed.
