birds of prey

After months, or years, of teasing and uncertainty, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have finally released the trailer for the upcoming Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. Yeah, that’s a mouthful. However, Margot Robbie being one of the holdovers from Suicide Squad make this movie more enticing.

As you see, whether it pans out in the movie, is more about Harley Quinn than anyone else. To be honest, I am okay with that. Directed by Cathy Yan, the movie seems to bear more action than we have seen in a DC movie to-date. Also, featuring more Robbie as Quinn is definitely a selling point since people have been wanting a Harley Quinn movie since her introduction in Batman: The Animated Series.

Birds of Prey trailer

The trailer doesn’t give us a whole lot to go on, but the synopsis from IMDB provides a basic outline:

“After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.”

One of the most pleasant surprises is Ewan McGregor playing the baddie, Black Mask. Judging solely by the trailer, which won’t influence the overall tone of the movie, he will be playing it big and intense. Kind of a counter to Harley’s Joker. May Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress had me since Birds of Prey was announced, and the introduction of Black Canary into the DCU. Not a huge fan of Rosie Perez, but we’ll see what happens.

I know I’m one of the few comic nerds that isn’t all that excited about Joker, which opens on Friday. Yes, I know it will probably be good, but the over-hype could hurt it. Not to mention, how crazy the world is, I may hold back from watching it on opening weekend. With that being said, Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is something I’m ready for in 2020.
