Joker Origin Not Based On Previously Told Story

It is important to understand that The Joker from the Batman comics has always been an enigma. He never had a true origin, while some writers felt the need to create one. It was always refreshing for a character to simply exist and his backstory was a major mystery. Making the character unpredictable. The best adaptation of the character was in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. However, Todd Phillips’ version of the character: Joker origin will not be tied to any comics.

With his Joker coming out later this year, Phillips told Empire that the character will not be beholden to any previously told origin. So, you can stick it with all the other “origin” stories of the character, including “The Killing Joke”.

“We didn’t follow anything from the comic-books, which people are gonna be mad about,” the writer-director tells Empire. “We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That’s what was interesting to me. We’re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It’s about this man.”

“I think [Phoenix)’s the greatest actor,” says Phillips. “We had a photo of him above our computer while we were writing. We constantly thought, ‘God, imagine if Joaquin actually does this.’”

While his enthusiasm is admirable, the bigger question remains: will this impact any of the future films to come? Most likely not. There was already a Joker introduced in Suicide Squad. Not to mention the character is beginning on the older side, so his longevity to doing more films is about as limited – if not more- than Ben Affleck’s Batman.

This Joker origin appears to be another “Elseworlds” type of story from Warner Bros. to capitalize on a “Batman” character that will make them some money. If it’s good in the process – well, good for them. However, it’s probably fair to say you shouldn’t put any stock in future appearances.
