Back in 2012, Warner Bros. decided that they were going to offer a shared universe that was going to culminate into Justice League. Problem was, they didn’t know how to do it without the view of one director. After the release of Justice League, that all went out the window and they started going for more of a one-shot movie universe. With all that, we bring you Joker.
Todd Phillips, from The Hangover franchise, is bring his version of the Batman villain to the big screen in his own solo movie. Joaquin Phoenix is taking over the role after Jared Leto’s single entry as the villain. Now, let’s be honest about one thing: no one played the live-action version of The Joker more than once. So, recasting the character made perfect sense. I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I have no real desire to see it.
I know myself better enough to know that I will see it, but I probably won’t see it on opening day. Phillips has a good way of letting me down as a director, obviously, he is trying to make The Joker a tragic villain by using The Killing Joke backstory as a stepping stone for the movie. Don’t get me wrong but Phoenix will do an amazing job playing a sympathetic character, but we don’t need a backstory to the character.
I never felt one was needed in the comic, much less in the movies. However, if you see the YouTube comments, people are already calling this the best movie of the year. As fickle as DC fans are, we will see what happens when the movie is released. It will most likely suffer the slings and arrows of outraged fans that most DC movies receive. It is very stylistic but aside from Phoenix that could be the only thing positive about it.
Let me know you thoughts in the comments below. Joker hits theaters on October 4th, 2019.
