Ever since the launch of the PlayStation 3, we have been hearing rumblings about a new installment in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Up until the release of the PlayStation 4, we heard that a Kingdom Hearts 3 will be coming. During this year’s E3, we finally got an official trailer for the game. Again, a lot of holes and no official release date. Due to the fact Square Enix is using Disney characters, Kingdom Hearts 3 was presented at this year’s D23.
Polygon reports that director Tetsuya Nomura was on hand to discuss the new content in the game, in which he revealed that part of the story will take place in Pixar’s Toy Story. Pixar’s Paul Lassetter was on hand to discuss the inclusion.
The new trailer shows Sora, taking on various Heartless in an action-driven trailer. Then the story mode shifts to Sora, Donald and Goofy arriving in the world of Toy Story. Buzz Lightyear and Woody helped “explain the Heartless problem plaguing Andy’s bedroom, joined by other toys like Hamm the piggy bank and Rex the dinosaur. They later ventured just outside of the home to take on toy-sized Heartless — and even visited a toy store, where Sora got to jump into a mech action figure for a different kind of combat.”
Other announcements during the panel was the inclusion of new worlds inspired by Big Hero 6 and Tangled. It is still unknown if any other Pixar or other new Disney properties will enter into the game given that Disney gave the creator total control to add whatever properties he would like. Oh yeah, one other thing: Kingdom Hearts 3 will be released in 2018.
