Minecraft for the XBLA has been a big hit since it launched and one of the biggest features is split screen multiplayer. Unfortantely not everyone could take advantage of this feature.
The catch here with split-screen multiplayer in Minecraft was it could only be accomplished on an HDTV. Now for most nowadays this isn’t an issue but there are still some out there that are still gaming on a standard defenition television. Enough people in fact for their to be a pretty big issue.
The fact that it can’t be used without an HDTV isn’t the issue but that it wasn’t clearly stated anywhere when buying the game. Microsoft has started the damage control by promising full refunds to those that contacted the publisher through customer support. The XBLA list has been updated as well saying “To experience split-screen functionality a high-definition television is required.” Microsoft has since made a statement as well.
“We updated our pre-sale notification to inform customers that an HD screen is required for the split-screen multiplayer feature on Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. If a player does not have an HD screen and purchased this game prior to the notification update, they are eligible for a full refund through customer support.”
This is one of those things that is a pain but really could happen to anyone. Nowadays most people don’t realize that there may be someone out there that doesn’t have an HD TV connected to their Xbox 360. Offering full refunds is a good way to keep the peace and adding a disclaimer will stop this from happening in the future. Hopefully, for Minecraft developer Mojang’s sake, this incident doesn’t turn people off of Minecraft all together.
