Sony is trying to make their Spider-Man Universe a large one. However, with none of the current slate actually featuring him, it is hard to say how they will work together. With Sony currently shooting Venom and a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie, add Morbius to that list of films. The Hollywood Reporter claims that their Morbius movie was being developed in secret.
In case you are unfamiliar with the character, here is a quick breakdown: Morbius is short for Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist who in an attempt to cure a fatal blood disease injects himself with a treatment serum derived from bats. Sound familiar. Morbius is transformed into a creature with vampire-like traits, including super strength and reflexes and a thirst for human blood. He was originally presented as a foe for Spider-Man, though he later evolved into a Marvel antihero. Which Marvel always likes to do.
Before anyone gets too excited about it, you should know who wrote the initial script. The script was written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Okay, you are probably wondering who these guys are. Here are some of the film you probably skipped. On purpose. Power Rangers, Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter and Gods of Egypt. Yeah, this is where you face-palm.
Morbius was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane and first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101. That was the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee.
With Sony’s track record, without Marvel, it is pretty clear that this film could suck. Not to mention, if it even gets off the ground. This is a very surprising character that they would turn into a film. However, vampires are not completely out of Sony’s wheel-house. Currently, the writers are showrunning the Lost in Space reboot for Netflix.
