Back during the holiday season of 2017, we mentioned a fan film that was going to improve upon the lightsaber scene from Star Wars: A New Hope. It was titled Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined. I still stand by my original statement from nearly a year and a half ago, “I love that fight because it is about two aging Jedi of the old order facing off one final time. Making way for Luke to find his way to the force. However, the choreography does leave a lot to be desired.”
FXitinPost finally completed the reimaging of the infamous “scene 38”, which was teased about it back in 2017. While the teaser, which was too short for my tastes, left a lot up to the imagination. Fortunately, the completed project did not disappoint.
Not only did the new combat scene manage to incorporate footage from the surrounding scenes, involving the escape from the Death Star, but CG footage of Obi-Wan and Vader’s final duel with Jedi abilities. Vader and Obi-Wan using force push. Using the force to retrieve their weapons. Use of dialogue from Revenge of the Sith.
According to the official description, Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined is “about the final confrontation between Ben Kenobi & Darth Vader in A New Hope nearly 20 years after the events of Revenge Of The Sith. This is a one-off, story-driven scene reflecting the characters in its chronological order from the point of Revenge of the Sith through Rebels, Rogue One, and all canon material leading to A New Hope.”
The new fight manages to capture the abilities that we have learned of the Jedi since all the intervening movies. Seeing them fighting to their potential gave me chills in the multiple viewings. If Lucasfilm wants to do another special edition with their version of this duel, I would hand over all the money.
