Nintendo revealed that Super Mario Maker 2 is in development for Nintendo Switch during Wednesday’s Direct presentation. It will launch in June of this year. It would seem that the critical acclaim of the game wasn’t lost on the fact that it was released on the ill-fated Wii U.
The reveal came alongside a lovely trailer showing off the new tools for the Mario game-creation game. Not only do we see Mario venturing through various eras of Mushroom Kingdom, but we got a quick glimpse of Luigi also in a builder costume.
Super Mario Maker first launched on Nintendo Wii U in 2015. A Nintendo 3DS port followed in 2016, although it eliminated many of the most beloved features from the wonderful original, such as sharing levels online. We loved the Wii U original, naming it one of our top games of the year when it launched back in fall 2015.
We should expect to see more from Super Mario Maker 2 in the months ahead, and likely E3 2019, which also happens in June.
