Microsoft to Pull Back on Copilot Push

If you have a Windows PC, you have noticed the heavy-handed Copilot AI push. They have shoved it into every product they have, even when it doesn’t make sense. Let’s be honest, many of the things Microsoft did never made much sense. However, with the money all these companies have spent, they need to show something for it. With everyone telling them to relax, it seems that they are starting to hear the people.

In a report from Windows Central, Microsoft is beginning to rethink how to implement AI. Much of this started with the announcement of Windows Recall that raised security concerns for users. Recall was designed to “captures snapshots of your screen every few seconds, was revealed to store sensitive user data in an unencrypted state, raising serious concerns among security researchers and experts.”

Microsoft seems to have heard the backlash. The are now “reevaluating its AI strategy on Windows 11 and plans changes to streamline or even remove certain AI features where they don’t make sense,” according to sources familiar with the situation.

Microsoft Pulling Back on Copilot Isn’t a Complete Win

“Copilot integrations like those found in Notepad and Paint are under review,” according to the report. Microsoft could remove certain Copilot integrations from these apps. It suggests that they may remove the Copilot branding. Which I don’t see happening. Or, they may pivot to a more streamlined experience. That seems more logical.

But they aren’t giving up on it entirely. Semantic Search, Agentic Workspace, Windows ML, and Windows AI APIs will continue as planned. Windows Recall is going back under review. The Copilot AI push is exhausting. Microsoft needs to do something to bring users back and ease up. As we mentioned last week, Microsoft will sell you out to the feds.

I would like to have Office without blasting me to try writing something using AI. I can’t wait for this bubble to burst.
