A couple of days ago, I heard millions of voice cry out in terror. Babylon 5 had been removed from its longtime home on Tubi. This allowed people to watch five seasons of this syndicated sci-fi television show from the nineties. It appears it does have a new home. Kind of surprised because Warner Bros. Discovery are dicks. Wouldn’t be surprised if they dropped them behind the paywall of HBO Max.
To everyone’s surprise, it has come to YouTube. It starts off with the “pilot episode, “The Gathering,” which serves as the entry point to the series’ intricate universe,” according to CordCutters.“This was followed by subsequent episodes such as “Midnight on the Firing Line” and “Soul Hunter,” released in sequence to build narrative momentum. The strategy involves posting one episode each week, allowing audiences to experience the story at a paced rhythm that mirrors the original broadcast schedule.”
Babylon 5 is Still Available for Free with a Catch
Now this isn’t ideal for fans that want to binge the show. Obviously, it is geared to bring new fans but fucks over old ones. For me, I wouldn’t watch for several weeks until I could binge a few episodes. As a huge fan of Deep Space Nine, I wouldn’t watch if it was released weekly. After all, I have seen the show already.
The idea of releasing a 30-year-old show in a weekly release schedule seems funky. If they were doing it on HBO Max, I could kind of see it. If you skint hard enough. It would be if they released I Love Lucy on a weekly basis on YouTube. What is the purpose?
It is a five season show with over twenty episodes a season. The only thing I can thing of is that no one is going to see it anywhere else for a while. This might be Warner Bros. Discovery’s way of covering that fact. Let’s be real, they don’t care about fan bases.
