PlayStation 3 Gets An Update

I know. This console is still getting update and will for a bit.

There is a chance that a small percentage of you still have a PlayStation 3. I’m sure there is a smaller percentage that still use the console. Mostly because the PlayStation 3 didn’t have backwards compatibility due to the architecture of the console. One thing that is even crazier, when you switch on your PS3, there is an update waiting for you. There is a new PlayStation 3 update as of right now.

According to PlayStation Lifestyle, the new update doesn’t hold any real benefits for the average gamer. “This system software update improves system performance,” the patch notes read. That is the same messaging since update 4.89. The current update is listed as 4.93.

“Please note, to play Blu-ray discs, your PS3 system needs a renewed Blu-ray player encryption key,” Sony added. “Please update your PS3 system software to the latest version to renew the Blu-ray player encryption key.”

Now, while updating Blu-ray encryption keys are necessary, there is another motive behind it. The encryption keys need to be updated every 12 to 18 months to allow the device to keep playing blu-rays. However, this is targeting mods of the device. I mean, this is a console that was released before anyone under the age of 20 was born.

PlayStation 3 Will Likely Continue to Receive Updates

Through general reporting, it appears that the console will continue to receive updates. Jailbreaking your PlayStation 3 was common during its life cycle. Given that the console is twenty years old, Sony still doesn’t want you doing whatever you want to it.

So, the best way to combat this is to not update your console. You don’t really need to. Games don’t require internet connections to install the games. However, if you’re someone like me, you can update it for whatever reason you want to.
