Every time the economy starts to go into the toilet, price increases come with it. Sony has already increased the prices of the basic PlayStation 5 by a hundred dollars. Of course, a PlayStation Plus price increase wasn’t far behind. Unfortunately, bully Sony into bringing down the price won’t work like it did with Microsoft. Unlike the Plex price increase, Sony’s increase isn’t as drastic.
A one-month subscription to the Essential tier now costs $11 per month, an increase of $1. Additionally, a three-month subscription just went up to $28, an increase of $3. Now, I’ve spoken before about a $1 increase isn’t a big deal, nor is a $3 increase. However, when you span it over a year, that brings it to $12 to $36 additionally a year.
Again, that may not sound like a lot but you know what goes when budgets tighten? Things like this. The price increase for new customers begins today, May 20. It is unclear what the leeway time will be before it hits recurring customers. Usually, there is a month time.
PlayStation Price Increase Won’t Go Down
The company is blaming this increase on “ongoing market conditions.” That means the Trump tariffs and the AI memory crunch. Since the plan offers cloud saving, those servers will cost to keep running. The sad part is that when markets go back to normal, these prices won’t.
You hear complaints that we should make them in the United States to lower prices. Back in the supply chain shortage days, American companies saw how much people were paying for overseas products. Those American companies raised their prices since everyone is paying those higher prices. Make more profit.
In some tech, like memory, they will go down due to market demand. Like RAM did after the crypto bust. Unfortunately, for items like PlayStation 5s or their services, they will remain where they are. They will be the new normal.
