One of the more unusual issues, especially after the PlayStation outage, is when a company goes down, you can still play disc-based games. However, from personal experience, it is hard to play any sort of game when it isn’t able to connect to its servers. I tried to play an Xbox game when my internet was down, and it wouldn’t let me. It kept asking me to sign into my Xbox account. Sony is different. Which is why today’s Microsoft outage affects anyone attempting to use their console.

An outage started affecting several Xbox services on Sunday evening. This includes accounts, the digital storefront, apps and games across Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Their status page notes that players “may have problems” playing digital and disc-based games. It points out that users might have problems with logging into their profiles. Which isn’t something new. Even if they are signed in, they might get disconnected.

“Features that require sign-in like most games, apps and social activity won’t be available,” the page states. It added that folks might have issues with launching apps and finding games in the store, too. At 10:45 AM, Xbox states that they identified the problem for gaming.

Xbox is Down but It’s Much Worse

Now, this comes off the heels of Xbox laying off 1300 employees. As well as the announcement of cutting another 1600 positions by June of 2027. It would be fair to note that while the optics look bad, the layoffs most likely have nothing to do with the outage. I know the internet likes to link things.

Xbox had had a number of issues even before the layoffs. This is simply another day at Microsoft/Xbox if we’re being honest. With that being said, it is important to note that they probably have less people able to work on the issue. Since many companies get rid of support teams before anyone else.
