As fall approaches, orders of Pumpkin Spice lattes run along Apple’s new event. This Wednesday, Apple will have their new “Surprise and Shine” event. This is expected to reveal the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. If rumors hold out to be true, the reveal of their first iPhone Fold. However, Wired’s whole piece was about something weird. About how this won’t be a full event, as we have had in the past.

Their entire piece is about how Apple may have two events; this one won’t reveal the basic iPhone 18. The problem is that we already knew that. Didn’t we? Nearly 16 months ago, we reported on a rumor that this was happening. Okay, we reported a rumor based on the site, The Information, which is hidden behind a paywall now.

Nevertheless, Wired makes these claims due to the fact they have quotes from people that believe it sounds logical.

“Based on leaks and the ongoing tech rumor mill and its decent track record for figuring these things out,” Wired states. “Apple is expected to prioritize its more expensive, premium devices this year and hold off on announcing its base model iPhone 18. That cheaper model is rumored to launch in the spring of 2027, potentially alongside an iPhone 18e and maybe a second-generation iPhone Air.”

However, through the story, they never mention the more than a year-old rumor. In some cases, sites did report on the rumor back in May of 2025. Could it be this is their way to making up for not reporting on the rumor? Don’t get me wrong, I love Wired even though some in the tech community do not. They believe them to be anti-tech.

What to Expect at the Apple Event on Wednesday

“According to the report, there will be a traditional iPhone event in the fall,” we reported. “This will focus on higher end iPhone devices. So, we would see models like the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and that mythical foldable iPhone see announced in the fall.”

Now, Wired is theorizing the reason for it. “Why the drastic change in strategy,” they wonder. “It may be due to the ongoing memory shortage, which has made just about everything more expensive. Apple hasn’t been spared.”

This is their way of placing current issues on backtracking rumors. The time the original rumor was reported, the “rampocalypse” wasn’t as bad as it was now. The framing of their theory is based on inflation of tech. At the time of the original rumor, there was no reasoning.

I theorized that it was due to drawing appeal. The fall event was all about the iPhones, and everyone wants to know about those. The second event wasn’t as huge of a draw. iPads, iPod, and various other things that don’t draw huge crowds. For Apple’s livestream event or people that write for tech media.

“This could help Apple keep the buzz going roughly every six months as opposed to once a year,” I thought. “With the cost of luxury items are increasing, having the high end coming in before the holidays and the lower end coming after the fact.”

I still believe that. Many people will believe what Wired says, and not me. I don’t expect them to. However, omitting the original rumor makes it seems like they are predicting something that has already been predicted. Or, simply writing an Apple piece gets some traction before the event.

In any case, it was something that I thought was weird.
