About a month ago, we mentioned how Xbox disc-to-digital was being rolled out. Well, as of yesterday, it has been rolled out to all. Yes, you can now convert some of you existing games into digital licenses. Initially, it was only available to Xbox Insiders. After a month, it has been released for all Xbox owners. There have been some YouTube videos that show you how easy it is.
One important key is that not every game is available. While there is no official list, trial and error seems to be the obvious method. One of the rare seamless rollouts from Xbox (or Microsoft for that matter) ever. Xbox 360 and original Xbox games are not included
How it works is rather easy. You insert your physical copy of say Gears of War 5. You will unlock and download the digital version to your library. The original disc will still function normally afterward. This is a personal license. If you give/sell your copy, the license on your system will be deleted. A new copy will be given to the new user. Very much in the same way if you gave the game to someone else.
Xbox Disc-to-Digital is out for All
Whether this was released now was planned, or in response to Sony’s decision, is unclear. Some people are still making a stink about it. “It’s still digital.” Yet, you still own the game. You don’t have to repurchase it unless you give it away.
If Sony decided to do something similar, I would be okay with that. However, unless you purchased a digital copy already, you would have to repurchase your physical game. That is Sony gets you. It took a long time for Sony to release PS3 games on the PlayStation 4.
This is a decent compromise for people who already have a physical game. A great reason to keep your Xbox Series X to make games playable on the new system.
