One of the features for the PlayStation 5 Pro was their PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This feature was to analyses game images pixel by pixel. Using proprietary AI upscaling, it would give the users more detailed, stable gameplay. To me, it can’t help but make me think of Blu-ray players that upscale older DVDs. Now, you may not have to drop the $900 if that is a main feature for you, but I doubt it is. Now QSSR is coming to PlayStation 5 users.
“Today, we’re excited to announce Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR): a new performance tier of AI upscaling,” PlayStation announced in a post. “Born from Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD, this quick new evolution of PSSR is built on two key innovations:
- A streamlined neural network architecture
- A hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5
“The first titles to use this innovative new library are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.”
QSSR Coming to all PS Users
PlayStation announced that they released it to all developers. However, those two titles are the only ones currently using it. It remains doubtful that many, if any, will do this for older games. Judging by the video, the enhancement is very negligible. But you can decide for yourself.
While it isn’t the same as the QSSR used in the PS5 Pro, it still upgrades some games. Which is good, I guess. Let’s be honest, with all the companies spending a lot for AI technology in their products, you ain’t gonna give away the far.
“QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey,” Mike Fitzgerald of Insomniac Games said. “It’s a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience to our players on PS5.”
I guess you can decide for yourselves.
