As a member of Generation X, there is a major push for nostalgia. A lot of people around my age, really look into the past for comfort. As I grow older, I start seeing people hating modern technology. It isn’t about hating modern technology; it is due to the fact that things change. People become uncomfortable learning new things. Which I found myself as a bit of an outlier. I like learning new things, even if it pisses me the hell off. However, jailbreaking new technology is growing in favor of playing old content. A jailbroken PS5 can now play PS2 games.

A homebrew emulator called PS5SX2, is for you. It’s built similarly to PCSX2, a long-running, open-source PS2 emulator. The software offers 4K upscaling, widescreen support, 60fps patches and HD texture packs. For certain games, you can use fan-run servers for online play. There are even achievements that pop up like PS5 trophies.

Now, it doesn’t work on every PlayStation 2 game. There is a major reason for that. Those games were originally offered in two types of discs. Some games were offered on DVD discs, which can be played on the PS5. Others were offered on CD-ROMs, which can’t.

So, games like God of War, Grand Theft Auto III, Metal Gear Solid 2 were shipped on DVD discs. Definitely, enjoy yourself. On the other hand, games like Rez and Tekken Tag Tournament were not. The consensus seems to indicate that many of them were early or smaller releases.

The other major caveat is that you can’t use the most major update. You need Relapse, which works on up to PlayStation 5 System Software version 13.60. Yes, there have been major jailbreaks of the most current version, but recent patches blocked those hacks.

I know there are still people that want to jailbreak their PS5 consoles and still play Grand Theft Auto 6. Sony is working hard to prevent that. The game itself requires version 14.10 to work. Providing you don’t update the console beyond 14.10, it should work. In theory.

However, I’m sure many of you don’t care about GTA6, and consider this a “fuck you” to Sony. But if the nostalgia bug is hitting you hard. You wish for those Crazy Taxi, SSX Tricky, and Dynasty Warriors days, have fun.
