Sam Altman can be called a lot of things. However, depending on which side of the fence you’re on could influence your perspective. Some say he’s an innovator. Others say he’s a con man. A good majority of people would say he’s a complete douche. From my perspective, I would say he’s part of the last two. His most recent comments about DRAM have people agreeing with the last one.
In a recent episode of Cheeky Pint and Stripe on YouTube, Sam Altman said something that got the internet buzzing. Many of those are gamers and people that use, you know, computers generally. “From a global allocation perspective, actually it’s quite terrible to have everyone have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer, and be used 5% of the time.”
The internet has framed the remark toward basic computer users and gamers. Of course, that is more of the clickbait title. What he’s referring to is people using DRAM and hosting it locally, and not in some data center. He believes that those people shouldn’t have that DRAM, so people like Altman can use it in their data.
Sam Altman is a Douchecanoe
Framing his answer as those people are the reason for the RAM shortage. A shortage that these data centers caused. Now, it’s the same framing that many used during the crypto mining book back in 2020. Then again, it wasn’t normies that were using it. It was people with money building crypto mining warehouses.
That’s what he and others will try to use. “It has nothing to do with us, it’s you people.” The people making AI slop on Facebook or Twitter. They are the real problems. This is the deflection that major corporations use to shift the narrative. Much like what Sony is doing with their lawsuit in California.
A commenter on YouTube said it best: “This video is therapy for everyone who hates themselves the most. You can listen to Sam Altman, and there you have someone you hate more.”
Amen, brother.
