Back during the height of the “Great Recession”, Adam and I were laid off. We had met when we worked for an e-commerce company. He was a sales representative, while I was a supervisor. We both worked for different teams, but there was some overlap. If I was the only supervisor on duty, I would be responsible for all the representatives no matter the team. This was back in 2007. Even then, I was working on an entertainment blog just because I wanted to do something. Adam and I bonded over the fact that we believed most people were stupid and didn’t think much. Basically, thinking so no one else had to.
We were laid off in the fall of 2009. Since his kids went to school – for a short time – at an elementary school down the street from my house, we would spend the hours hanging out. It was during that time when Adam rolled his head toward me, from my favorite recliner, and said, “we should start a podcast.”
Keep in mind, many of those long-running podcasts had only started like two years before us. Kevin Smith’s Smodcast, The History of Rome, and Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast. We signed up for the domain, The Lazy Geeks, and we were on our way. During one of our brainstorming sessions, we we discussing what our tagline should be. I can’t remember who came up with it, but we decided on “we’re thinking, so you don’t have to.”
We laughed at the preposterous tone of the tagline. Obviously, we were making fun of ourselves. In no way did we thinking we were smarter than the public. Remember, this was late 2009 to early 2010. The world was so much different then.
Now…
The internet is so much different. A growing portion of society believe the world is flat. People are denying science. Denying basic facts of life. Terrance Howard created his own math because he was bad at the basic version. People speaking ignorance with their whole chest. Only to double down when proven wrong. Believing that admitting one was wrong is soft. We’ve even gotten to the point that misogynist think that having sex with women is gay. When doing your own research consists of listening to a podcast and a couple of YouTube videos.
As of 2026, we are retiring the old tagline. It’s not funny anymore. Not even satirical, because no one is thinking. Free thinkers, themselves, recite the same talking point that everyone else says. The irony is lost on them for calling other people sheep, when they do the same.
So now, the new tagline of The Lazy Geeks is: “We’re thinking, because we know you’re not.” Yeah, it may be too much on the nose, but our society doesn’t have the ability to discuss nuance. We are for people that are starting to believe they’re going crazy. That rationality is a thing of the past. For people that don’t believe this stupidity isn’t just a generational thing. We see boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z all saying stupid shit. Have morphed reality into their sense of being.
So, as of now, we will be known as: “The Lazy Geeks. We’re thinking, because we know you’re not.”
