If you listened to last week’s The Lazy Geeks, you would have heard me mention that Ketchup Studios was in the market to purchase the once-canned film, Coyote vs ACME. In an official announcement on Monday, it was confirmed by Deadline. The once-canned film by Discovery Warner for tax purposes, will see the light of day. However, no official release date has been announced, but it is expected to be released in 2026.
Gareth West, CEO of Ketchup Entertainment, said today: “We’re thrilled to have made a deal with Warner Bros. Pictures to bring this film to audiences worldwide. Coyote vs Acme is a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern storytelling, capturing the essence of the beloved Looney Tunes characters while introducing them to a new generation. We believe it will resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers alike.”
Coyote vs Acme Coming to a Theater
Despite high screening reviews, Discovery Warner head, David Zazlav, decided to not release the film and take the tax write off. This came on the heels of several movies that were completed and at the last minute pulled for tax purposes. Believing that the tax write off would garner them more than if it was released in theaters. If you would like to see this play out, just watch Tropic Thunder. When the studio head was going to let their main star die for a tax write off.
It is sad to see this from a studio that many in the industry considered a filmmaker’s studio. You do one for them, and they will let you do one for yourself. It generated a lot of goodwill with directors like Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Ben Affleck, and Bradley Cooper.
However, in recent years, visionary directors like Christopher Nolan left the studio that was their cash cow. With their inability to appease Nolan, it shows you that any movie that is being done for that studio it’s 50-50 if it ever gets released.
