In a rare move for Xbox, they were able to get a leg up on Sony. Sony has been suffering immense blowback from their decision to no longer offer physical discs. Xbox, which hasn’t always had the ability to read the room, did something positive. Their touted “disc-to-digital” is coming starting August 31, 2026.

Xbox Insiders will have the ability to claim a “digital entitlement” for “most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games”. This is during the pilot program.  Simply by insert the disc into a console and launching it. That game will then be playable completely digitally. No longer the need to ever insert the disc, as long as you (or a member of your family account) is logged in. The digital entitlement will also allow access to features like Xbox Play Anywhere (for play on PC) and Xbox Cloud Gaming, for supported titles.

There is one extreme caveat. There always is. Each disc will be tied to a single account. Meaning “one revokable license per game disc,” Microsoft said. That means if you sell, or give, it to another person, your license will be revoked. The new machine will receive the license.

Xbox Disc-to-Digital Program Coming

Now, before you blow a gasket, this would happen anyway. If you lost, sold, or someone stole the game – you would no longer be able to play the game. I know this will be a “unpopular opinion” but that sounds fair.

This will include “most” Xbox One and Xbox One X games. Like anything, some games have to be tested and more games will be included later one. Whether original Xbox or Xbox 360 game will be included is sketchy at this time. But, never say never.

It is important to be said that Xbox has always been better with backwards compatibility. As opposed to Sony. When they offered backwards compatibility, they did it begrudgingly. What say you, Sony?
