The tech side of the internet has blown a gasket again, regarding Sony. It was announced through a Japanese blog that their last Sony 4K Blu-ray player has ended production. Why is that important? It is its last Blu-ray player. The UBP-X700/K, the company’s last UHD Blu-ray player.
The news comes from the Japanese blog Kunoku, which is also a Sony retailer. Per the post, sales of the X700 are ending October 22, in Japan. Now, if you hit any of the other posts about this, it would make you believe 4K Blu-ray players will be obsolete. They won’t. Just Sony is making them anymore.
There are a lot of other brands and styles of players that people can get. This is not the end of the universe as we know it. It just blew up because it’s Sony. Given that they just discontinued optical disk drives from their upcoming console, this shouldn’t be shocking.
Sony 4K Blu-ray Player isn’t the End of the World
While most people have drifted away from physical media, this was bound to happen. People all over the internet were clowning people that still bought physical media. Now, Sony makes the same shift and people are losing their minds. While people that are saying Panasonic is the only option, they are idiots.
It comes down to who is buying it for what. Now, this is a Japanese blog. You can still find other Sony 4K players online. If you are a casual movie watcher, you can get a cheap no name player for cheap. If you’re a cinephile, you are probably already buying a more expensive Panasonic player.
Personally, I never upgraded my player since I never upgraded my TV to a 4K version yet. I already have a low-end Sony Blu-ray player, and it’s okay. The internet is only doing this because it’s a clickbait headline and Sony. If it matters that much, just buy one.
