Bill Gates’ daughter, otherwise known as Phoebe Gates, is having serious explaining to do. The 23-year-old’s start up has come under investigation due to some serious questionable business practices, according to Futurism.

According to the reporting, Gates’ online affiliate marketing startup Phia used a shady technique called “cookie stuffing.” They collect commissions from online sales it had nothing to do with. For the uninitiated, “cookie stuffing” is a tactic used in fraudulent affiliate marketing. If you purchase something using an affiliate link, when you move to purchase, the link is replaced. Another link to steal the commission from the person that referred them.

Most recently, Honey, the browser extension, was accused of doing just that. They partnered with many YouTube and online influencers and gave them a special code to get a commission. However, when people went to check out, Honey switched the code to keep the money and the referrer never received their commission.

Bloomberg has been on top of this reporting. Then, last week, Bloomberg followed up with receipts that intensified the scandal. Internal Slack messages suggest that both Gates and her co-founder Sophia Kianni knew about the scheme since at least December of last year.

Bloomberg even showed that after the “auto pop for cookie drop” was turned off, their revenue dropped from $80,000 a day to merely $10,000 to $28,000. It seemed that the startup’s core product, a browser extension, automatically flagged any online sale the user was completing to take credit for it, even if the user never made use of the Phia extension.

There are two things you could take away from this: 1) never trust browser extensions, and 2) she seems to be a chip off the old block. She once claimed that she is trying to make it on her own with using her privilege and last name. Although, it is fair to assume that both got her where she is to begin with. Even then, she will definitely use daddy to help fund her legal team when this hits the bottom.
