It is almost ridiculous at this point. I mean, it started as a joke but it’s become less funny with each passing day. Microsoft causing issues with its own OS is becoming something that happens in a day ending in “Y”. Another Windows update is causing games to crash and a whole lot of other issues.

Windows 11 KB5121003 is August 2026’s big security update that fixes over 400 security issues. Sounds good right? But 400 security issues? Jesus. However, it’s causing major issues for some games. I guess this is what happens when you vibe code. Right, Microsoft? Gamers told Windows Latest that ARC Raiders and The Finals are among the games that crash after installing the mandatory update. The game studio didn’t hold back when they claimed the Windows Update is responsible.

“We’re aware of a new crash introduced with the release of a Windows update (KB5121003) that may be affecting some of you,” Embark, the studio behind ARC Raiders, wrote in a message on Discord, as first spotted by Windows Latest. “The team is working on a fix, and we will keep you posted on any updates.”

Windows Update is Causing Games to Crash

In the meantime, Embark has told users to open the Windows Command Prompt and disable the driver. This is further detailed in a report by PC World. It’s also possible to delete the patch entirely, which can be done in the Update History settings. However, this would leave people open to the aforementioned 400 vulnerabilities. Let’s be honest though, if you lasted this long without those patches, you could probably last a bit longer until the issues is fixed.

There are other issues with the update. For example, there are reports of display refresh rates unexpectedly dropping, black screens, broken HDR behavior, and other graphics-related problems.

Windows Latest is also seeing isolated reports of Windows Hello problems after the update, including a case where PIN credentials have to be re-enrolled after every reboot. As well as another report where Windows fails to load the existing Windows Hello container.

“After installing KB5121003 (build 26100.9168/26200.9168), Windows Hello PIN sign-in fails on every single reboot, forcing me to reconnect to my Microsoft account to re-enroll the PIN each time,” one user told Windows Latest in an email.

“Windows deletes and recreates the key each reboot (different key GUID every time), but the new key becomes corrupted again by the next boot, an infinite loop.”

Just another day ending in “Y”.
