Among the numerous things people hate about Microsoft, it was their inability to opt-out of OneDrive. I’ll be honest, OneDrive was the least annoying things about Windows. At least, for me. I know that puts me in the minority or may view it as a “hot take”. However, I did a lot of work on a laptop and then would switch to my PC. I know for a lot of people, it was annoying and they had privacy concerns. Now, in a minor victory, you can finally opt-out of OneDrive.
The discovery was made by Windows Latest, when they “turned on two of my PCs running stable builds of Windows 11 25H2, a full-screen pop-up appeared and asked me if I’d like to “Opt out of backup” or continue with OneDrive. I do not have the OneDrive sync client on these PCs, but Windows is configured to back up files, folders, settings, and credentials through the Windows Backup app.”
Microsoft Offers Opt-Out of OneDrive
Obviously, this won’t convert Microsoft haters to change their tune. Nor should it. Yet, I usually find it interesting how people will hate on Microsoft’s OneDrive, but will be okay moving everything within Google. Anyways, giving users an option of whether being in the ecosystem or not is important.

Microsoft will be sure to remind you the “dangers” of not backing up your files. Previously, all you had the option for was to be reminded in 3 days. The bigger question no one is asking is how “permanent” will this option be. What I’m saying is how long will it be before they remind you again.
From my side, most likely when there is a big update. A reminder that you are not hooked into their cloud service will pop up. Which will not be as annoying but we can’t expect them to let you go that easily.
