Overdrive came and went in a week. Much like Trump’s latest press secretary. However, Overdrive has lasting impact unlike Katie Zacharia will ever have. It was a storefront for PlayStation games for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles. They housed PS4 and PS5 games. It exploded within two days of release on GitHub.

It had 1,600 free PS4 and PS5 games for jailbroken PS5 consoles. Pulling AAA and indie titles directly from third-party file-hosting platforms. Early adopters had mixed reviews due to the links containing either broken or offered terrible download speeds.

Edigax, a popular PS5 modder and jailbreak creator, posted about it on social media two days after it launched. The post racked up nearly 10 million views and drew more than 600 comments, bringing a flood of attention to Overdrive. Here’s where the problem lies.

Overdrive Came and Went Within a Week

Many media outlets have been reporting that it was a cease-and-desist order that brought it down. However, it was never confirmed that this was the case. That isn’t to say that it won’t be, but at this moment there is no confirmation.

The problem for companies, like Sony, within hours of Overdrive going dark, several forks and cloned repositories appeared online. Thus, reinstating multiple versions of the store under new hosts. At least two GitHub repositories cropped up in less than a day, with one already expanded to more than 1,800 titles.

It was reportedly created with Claude. Overdrive runs on consoles jailbroken with Relapse. An exploit chain that pairs a WebKit browser bug. This bug has a kernel flaw and allows homebrew execution on PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles running firmware 7.00 through 13.60.

As we said with ArtCraft, once clones are out there, it becomes a game of whack-a-mole. Once you cut off one, three will replace it. Given Sony’s actions as of late, no one will shed a tear for Sony.
