Everyone seems to hate AI being inserted in their operating systems. Microsoft got major pushback after they launched Copilot heavily into Windows 11. Apple Intelligence is being heavily baked into their macOS 27. None of its functionality is able to be removed manually. Until now. A new tool is allowing Mac users the ability to easily turn off Apple Intelligence with one click. As well as free up to 12GB of storage.
According to Ars Technica, RemoveMacAI is a command-line tool. It allows macOS 27 users to “turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27″ in a way that is “fully reversible,” per the GitHub page. They said that Apple’s Intelligence models take up “about 12GB.” However, the models can actually take up over 30GB, according to The Verge.
RemoveMacAI “turns off Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, and all the summaries. It then deletes the models and stops macOS from downloading them again”. Which is something Microsoft always does. “Dictation still works because it’s a separate setting,” the developer said in a Reddit post first reported by MacRumors.
Tool to Remove Apple Intelligence
“It uses a configuration profile you approve in System Settings plus Apple’s own asset service, so [System Integrity Protection] stays on and nothing in /System gets touched directly,” The tools developer said. “Removemacai revert removes the profile, and macOS downloads the models again when you turn a feature back on.”
The dev, also, stated that you can remove Apple Intelligence features you don’t want. You can keep others. Which is kind of cool. I guess.
This makes me wonder how long it will take for Apple to block this. As Microsoft did with their decluttering issues. However, Apple has a loyal fanbase. They follow the “this is something you WILL like” mantra. But, with AI, it seems more people are pushing back. Just curious to see how many.
